UIB Apprenticeship Journey

UIB prides itself on the talent and experience that we have within the team, and we believe that it is important to pass this industry experience and knowledge along to the next generation of brokers to ensure that UIB can continue to serve our loyal clients with innovative solutions in managing risks.

Six months ago, UIB welcomed Samantha Ager as an Apprentice Trainer Broker within the International Liability team. Working with Louise Morris, Head of International Liability, Samantha has had a great start to her career at UIB and has settled in well with the team. We look forward to seeing her continue to grow and develop within her role.

How are you finding life at UIB?
I’m really enjoying my role at UIB. It has been a great 6 months, and everybody has been extremely welcoming!

Do you have access to enough support within the company?
I am extremely fortunate to have Louise Morris as an amazing line manager, as well as a fantastic team. They are all incredibly supportive and very approachable, so I’m never stuck if I need help. I also am lucky to have made great friends and met lovely people from all over the company who have offered a helping hand.

Since starting your Apprenticeship in your new role, have you faced any challenges?
Time management can be slightly challenging sometimes as I am juggling apprenticeship modules, workshops, studying for exams, meetings and carrying out my daily job role.  However, I am on track and currently preparing for my second exam.

How are you applying your newfound knowledge from your course to your role at UIB?
I participate in workshops ranging from 3 to 6 hours, where I am given the opportunity to meet other apprentices from all over the UK that are either brokers, underwriters or claims handlers. We speak about our job roles and answer case study questions proposed by the host of the workshop. It is a great way to expand my network, helping me broaden my knowledge of other roles within the industry. The exams within the course are about all sectors of insurance, so studying for them is also a great way to expand my insurance knowledge.

What does a typical week as an apprentice look like?
So far, no week has been the same. There are a variety of different projects and courses to attend. For example, one week could be handling our international liability accounts, as well as attending a workshop and calls with my tutor about upcoming exams and courses. However, another week could be attending internal/ external meetings and learning from my team, completing coursework, and studying for the upcoming LM2 exam.

What are your goals beyond your course?
The ultimate goal is to achieve my qualification and grow and develop within my role at UIB, this is a goal I hope to continue to achieve for further qualifications such as DIP CII. Overall, I look forward to gaining knowledge and experience, and to be able to confidently and effectively cater to clients’ needs.
